Capoeira is relatively unknown in the USA and there are many myths and misperceptions that keep people from participating. Here are some of the common reasons heard and our comments about why these reasons are easily overcome.

  • I am not in good enough physical condition to train capoeira.” Capoeira is in part about becoming more fit and making the most of yourself. Our training is designed to let students push their personal limits rather than expect all students to perform the same.
  • “It’s a young persons sport.” Our group here in Beaverton has an average age of about 35 years with ages from 5 to 65 in training. Everyone trains to push their limits to new comfort zones.
  • “I saw YouTube.com videos of capoeira and I could never dream of doing it.” You’re not alone on this one. Most people posting capoeira videos are advanced and been training for many years and decades. Better to discover capoeira through a local beginners class.
  • “I might injure myself.” Here’s a fact. People who do not have fear of injury are frequently reckless to themselves and others around them. Fear is a healthy system of allowing you to explore your limits when you are ready. Like getting out of your bed each day or training any martial art, there are dangers in capoeira.
  • “There’s no capoeira school close enough to my home.” Capoeira Oregon is located near the intersection of Hwy 217 and Hwy 10 (Beaverton-Hillsdale Hwy). We are within 20 minutes to all of west Portland, Tigard, Lake Oswego, Hillsboro, and other surrounding communities and of course Beaverton.
